A parent participation outdoor preschool program

The morning fog blanket drifted away, the forest floor glistens and ten 3-5 year olds can be seen turning over leaves and climbing over fallen logs in search of the small creatures that lay hidden there. A girl finds a fallen nest, bringing the attention of several kids to circle around it asking questions, debating on all the things they know to be true about what they see. The teacher observes, he listens to the ideas of the children. Together they decide to look for more nests. Looking up, down, near and far.

Children are encouraged to explore. We want them to feel the freedom and peace that nature provides. Although they are in visual distance, we give them the sensation of safe solitude. Here children are seen playing alone or together, digging with sticks or singing songs to themselves. Stories and songs are shared to help children express the natural wonderment found amongst the trees. Their play is the serious work they accomplish throughout the day. Through this play, children practice social-emotional skills with peers, developing tools of self-awareness and regulation.
